Crossfire Heart who previously brought us ‘In My Mind’ have released their latest track ‘Rock This Town’ (29th November 2024) and as the name suggests, it’s more of a Country Rock song with emphasis on the Rock.

“You were just cruel
Pretending to be kind
Playing it cool
But outta your mind
You gave me hope
Then took my faith
So much love
That all went to waste.”
The first verse starts referencing Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 4 “I must be cruel, only to be kind.” It also touches on how the connection we have with others, what they give and take, and how it can and end in a not so pleasant way. Detailing how sometimes so much effort is made only for it not to be valued or appreciated and has gone to waste.
“Your every word was a contradiction
Did you find a cure for your addiction?”
The pre-chorus portrays a conflicting relationship, possibly even a coercive one. It also references it as an addiction. The suggestion that finding a “cure” for this addiction will enable you to experience love fully.
“I see you watching every day
I know who you are
And I sure love the way
You move with that guitar
Things change, people change
Nothing stays the same
And babe it’s such a shame
We’ll never rock this town again.”
The chorus details someone watching you with a guitar and knowing who they are. Perhaps the guitar is a metaphor for our heart and having our heart strings pulled and played; and the person that we see watching us is either ourselves, conscious of how we’re being perceived, or we’ve a greater sense of self awareness. The chorus also details a fact of life in that “Things change, people change, nothing stays the same.” Change is often perceived as negative, yet it gives us so many new opportunities and chances to reinvent ourselves.
“Now there’s no smoke
Without a fire
Promised that you
Could take me higher
You can’t deny
Wanting to be free
You felt alive
Being with me.”
The second verse details the phrase “no smoke without a fire” meaning that there’s always some reason for a rumour. The promise of taking you higher could be linked to our emotions and wanting a moment of euphoria, or an outer-body experience, something that the music as much as a loved one can provide. It’s fundamental that we want to feel free and alive, this can be independent of any other person.
The song then returns to both the pre-chorus and chorus.
“Throw me to the wolves
Watch me lead the pack
It ain’t my fault
You’re never coming back
Take your aim
‘Cause I’m stand here
But you should know
I’m all out of fear.”
Verse 3 portrays the sense of fending for yourself and thriving with reference to the wolves and leading the pack. It’s interesting that fault or blame should be portioned for not returning as we all have choice. Reference to taking your aim has various connotations, one being that of a gun (which would link in with the previous line of “never coming back”) whilst the other meaning is taking your chances in life. We stand there ready for life albeit sometimes with a little bit of fear of the unknown.
“You talked the talk but you took no action
Seems you became your own distraction.”
The pre chorus here is detailing how sometimes we can become caught up in the preparation and over complicate things. Procrastination has seemingly taken hold to avoid following through with the talk.
The song finishes with the chorus, reminding us of our inner strings to be played and pulled and to be conscious that things change; as they say, nothing good ever lasts forever.
The track was released 29th November 2024 and is available to stream, play and download from your usual music services.
